Following the launch of the Australia Israel Medical Research Fund, AusIMed, in Melbourne, Dr. Yair Birnbaum, Associate Director General of the Hadassah University Medical Center, went on to promote Hadassah awareness in another of Hadassah Australia’s “hometowns”--Perth, Western Australia. In an editorial following Dr. Birnbaum’s visit, the editor of the local weekly Jewish newspaper, The Maccabean, noted: “In a crazy world, Hadassah is an island of sanity, working for peace through medicine. And if gold medals are being awarded, they are truly deserving.”

With the goal of enhancing knowledge of Israel beyond the Middle East conflict, the family of the late Valda Knight, past president of Hadassah New Zealand, has established the Valda Knight Memorial Scholarship to enable an individual to spend two to three weeks in Israel in professional development and personal enrichment, getting to know one of the world’s leading research and teaching hospitals—the Hadassah Medical Center.

Tapping into ingenuity and community connections, Hadassah Australia created AusIMed—the Australia Israel Medical Research Fund—to support clinical collaboration and bilateral research between the Hadassah Medical Center and high-level hospitals in Australia. AusIMed was launched at a gala dinner on July 29, in coordination with the Australian Ministry of Health and the State Zionist Council of Victoria.

HE Tamar Samash, recently appointed Ambassador of Israel to Belgium and Luxembourg, chose Hadassah as the first organization to be hosted for a fundraising event in her residence.

In the presence of Hadassah Medical Center Director General Prof. Shlomo Mor-Yosef and Associate Director General Dr. Yair Birnbaum, Hadassah Switzerland-Geneva held an elegant fundraising dinner and auction at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Philippe Amon, major supporters of the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower Campaign, who had recently visited the Hadassah Medical Center.

After being approached by Director of Hadassah Germany Gady Gronich, Minstrel Musician Marcus van Langen agreed to donate funds from his latest CD sales to the Hadassah Medical Center. This particular CD included 20 songs from the Middle Ages, and featured a famous Palestinian tune about the “Holyland,” written in the 1200s.

Close to 100 people attended a Hadassah Germany panel presentation featuring an Arab and a Jewish Israeli, entitled “Can Opposites Connect—Two Israelis in Dialogue.” The presenters were Dr. Mohammed Saif-Alden Wattad, an attorney, and Efraim Lapid, Brigadier General and Senior Intelligence Officer for the Israel Defense Forces, with the dialogue moderated by Professor Andreas Bönte, Bavarian Television’s Program Manager for Planning and Development.

The Chief Rabbi of Panama, Rabbi Sion Levy, in the presence of the Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Shlomo Moshe Amar, and over 150 of his Panamanian compatriots, was honored with a cornerstone dedication ceremony at the Fannie and Maxwell Abbell Synagogue at Hadassah University Hospital, marking the donation of one million dollars by a Panamanian family to the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower in the Panamanian Rabbi's honor.
