Ayelet, a 14-year-old teenager, used to hold her right hand behind her back or cradled within her left because she was born with two middle fingers fused solidly together; now, however, her fingers appear perfectly normal, thanks to successful surgery performed by Prof. Mordechai Sela, head of the Department of Maxillofacial Rehabilitation at the Hadassah Medical Center.
Hadassah physicians have discovered a new approach to repair injured hearts by growing heart cells in culture from a segment of the heart's left atrium, often removed during open-heart surgery.

Prof. Chaim Lotan, head of Hadassah's Heart Institute, and his colleague, Dr. David Planer, have just published the long-term results from the Israeli e-Cypher Registry's assessment of stent safety and efficacy in the April 1, 2008 issue of The American Journal of Cardiology.

Hadassah International was pleased to present the 2008 Nancy Falchuk Nursing Scholarship Awards during its recent Conference in Jerusalem to four leading nurses from Hadassah Hospital-Ein Kerem: Pnina Sharon, Head Nurse, Department of Internal Medicine C; and Megy Ben-Hayim, Orit Winograd, and Nilli Harari, Head Nurses, Department of Obstetrics, the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Mother and Child Center.
The 2007 international cardiology meeting, which addressed "Innovations in Cardiovascular Interventions," was organized by Prof. Chaim Lotan, head of Hadassah's Heart Institute, together with Prof. Rafael Beyar of Israel's Rambam Hospital.

An International Heart Failure Symposium was hosted by Hadassah Hospital-Ein Kerem in November 2007, with the participation of leading specialists in the field of heart failure from Israel and abroad.
Thanks to a study conducted by Operating Room Head Nurse Miriam Avraham, all linens and clothes the surgeons and nurses wear in Hadassah's operating rooms are now disposable.
Hadassah Hospital-Ein Kerem is now home to a "Medical Cinemateque"—the first movie theater in the world within a hospital setting, where patients view movies that deal with various medical issues.
A Jerusalem street has been named in memory of Former Hadassah Medical Center Director General Dr. Haim Yassky, who was murdered along with 78 other Hadassah health professionals when their convoy was ambushed on its way up to Hadassah Hospital-Mount Scopus in April 1948 as it attempted to bring medical supplies to the hospital.
Hadassah's recently opened Bearman Intermediate Respiratory Care Unit (IRCU) has already enhanced the quality of life for two children with lung problems, one an Israeli, the other a Palestinian from the Gaza Strip.

The Hadassah Medical Center will be hosting its second International Congress on Chronic Disorders and Disabilities in Children, December 3-5, 2008 in Jerusalem.
Knowing that fasting on religious holidays poses specific health risks for diabetics, Hadassah Hospital-Mount Scopus Pediatrician Dr. David Zangen and his colleagues decided to study whether prolonged fasting--over 25 hours--is safe for individuals with Type I diabetes. They found that it can be, if the insulin dosage is lowered as needed, and they published the results in the prestigious medical journal, Diabetic Medicine, which led to requests for more information from Jews and Muslims around the world.

The Hadassah Medical Center has chosen Yael Castiel, Nurse Coordinator of the Eli Douer & Family Center for Pediatric Genetic and Chronic Diseases, as the most outstanding employee of 2008. In addition to running the Center, Yael was involved in planning the renovation of Eliahou Zilkha Ward A, which was recently completed.

Dr. Jorge Makarovsky, who directed the first Argentinean heart transplant on a child with restrictive cardiomyopathy and is a former head of Cardiovascular Pediatric Surgery and Transplantation at the Hospital Italiano in Buenos Aires, met with cardiac colleagues at the Hadassah Medical Center this winter and returned home eager to establish academic and clinical exchanges for Argentinian physicians with their counterparts at Hadassah.
Dr. Mickey Weintraub, head of the Pediatric Hemato-Oncology Unit in the Department of Pediatrics at the Hadassah Medical Center, met with pediatric hematology-oncology colleagues at Hôpital Archet, the teaching hospital in Nice, France, following through on a Memorandum of Understanding for clinical exchange that was signed between Hadassah and the University of Nice School of Medicine.

United States Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services, Dr. Tevi Troy, met with Prof. Shmuel Shapira, Dean of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Braun School of Public Health and Deputy Director General of the Hadassah Medical Center, in April.
Dr. José Farah, a Mexican physician from Guadalajara, will be participating in the Hadassah Medical Center's anesthesiology residency program, thanks to some wise advice from a Hadassah International supporter at Conference 2008 in Jerusalem.

Close friends, representatives from Hadassah Australia, past and present Hadassah presidents, and representatives from the Hadassah Medical Center, all came together to dedicate the Jerusalem Crisis Intervention Center, the special fundraising project of Hadassah Australia, in memory of Celia Freshman, major donor from Melbourne, Australia.

Hadassah Mexico opened doors to many segments of the Mexican communities in Mexico City and Monterrey for the Hadassah Medical Center, when the unit hosted Prof. Yaacov Naparstek, Chairman of Hadassah Hospital-Ein Kerem's Department of Medicine, for a lecture series and get-togethers with prominent Mexican families. Seven events later, $250,000 was pledged for the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower.
Commemorating the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel, Hadassah Switzerland-Zurich hosted an orchestral concert featuring The Thelma Yellin Youth Symphony Orchestra from Givatayim, Israel, under the patronage of HE Ilan Elgar, Israel's Ambassador to Switzerland.
Hadassah Panama's First-Aid Symposium and First-Aid Kit Sale generated great interest and many purchases, raising money for pediatric metabolic research at the Hadassah Medical Center.
At the request of Hadassah Panama President Margie Mizrachi, Hadassah International hosted a leadership training seminar in Panama for the unit's core group, conducted by Hadassah International Director Melissa Kaplan and Major Gifts Chair Sherry Altura.
Hadassah Germany Gains Status in Professional Circles

Hadassah Germany set up a stand at the Christlicher Gesundheitskongress (Christian Health Congress) in Kassel during the end of March, with hundreds of participants stopping by to learn about Hadassah. In April, Hadassah Germany Director Gady Gronich gave a presentation to 75 guests of the German-Israeli Association at the Die Deutsche Apotheker-und Ärztebank (the German pharmacists and doctors bank) in Frankfurt, and in May, Mr. Gronich represented Hadassah Germany at the Saxon Israel Conference in Perna, marking Israel's 6oth anniversary.
Hadassah International's 2008 Conference in Jerusalem, "Partners in Healing," received great press coverage in France and online.
Participating in the Israel version of Young Hadassah International's World Wide Walk, doctors, nurses, new immigrants, students from Merkaz Hamagshimim Hadassah, as well as Young Judaea Year Course participants ran in the Jerusalem Half Marathon on March 27, wearing orange t-shirts, under the banner "Run for Hadassah--Save People's Lives."
Young Hadassah United Kingdom World Wide Walk
Over 50 walkers participated in the Young Hadassah United Kingdom World Wide Walk, despite poor weather conditions. Led by Vanessa Fragis, the Young Hadassah UK team raised £1,020 for the Hadassah Medical Center.
In celebration of the Jewish holiday of Purim, a group of salsa dancers in masquerade took over the entrance lobby of Hadassah-Ein Kerem.
In an effort to bring together different cultures living in Amsterdam and to raise awareness about the all-inclusive mission of Hadassah, Young Hadassah Holland is hosting a second series of three multicultural cooking workshops.
