Inducing the replication of heart cells, scientists in the Cardiovascular Research Center at the Hadassah Medical Center Heart Institute took atrial appendages (muscular pouches of the atrium wall) from mice and rats and successfully grew stem cells in large quantities.


The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an international leader in diabetic research, the Hadassah Medical Center, Hebrew University, and Pfizer have begun a collaborative project to explore the potential of drugs to stimulate replication and regeneration of insulin-producing cells in people with Type 1 diabetes.


While visiting the Hadassah Medical Center's Charlotte R. Bloomberg Mother and Child Center a year ago, Ed and Ruth Levinson of Orinda, California, noticed that the train was not working.  This observation began a long-term relationship between Mr. Levinson, an attorney and model train aficionado, and Hadassah's toy locomotive.



Researchers at the Hadassah Medical Center and Hebrew University have discovered in experimentation with mice that the mechanism of cell regeneration that is switched on during pregnancy may be triggered for cell regeneration in older patients.


Dr. Mordechai Duvdevani, Director of Endo-urology and Lithotripsy in the Hadassah Medical Center's Department of Urology, has been elected to an elite international committee that determines which medical centers throughout the world will be authorized to conduct fellowships in endo-urology.

The Heart Institute at the Hadassah Medical Center recently completed the testing of a novel non-invasive approach to diagnosing the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD).  Their results correlated well with subsequent findings from angiography and other cardiac scans.


Prof. Itamar Raz, Director of the Diabetes Unit at the Hadassah Medical Center, has been chosen to co-chair a large international research trial to assess the potential of a new medication (OnglyzaTM) to decrease the risk of cardiovascular events and related mortality in patients with Type 2 diabetes.


Dr. Daniel Shouval has put Israel--and Hadassah--on the hepatology map, opening the country's first liver unit and contributing to medical understanding of hepatitis and other liver diseases.  



Knowing that the medicine of tomorrow cannot be practiced in the settings of yesterday, Hadassah embarked on the daunting task of preparing for the future.  After careful exploration and examination of the Medical Center's current facilities, it became clear that Hadassah needed a new, totally different inpatient facility to match its first-rate health care team. 



Five journalists from major media companies in Austria visited the Hadassah Medical Center in March. In the forefront, at Hadassah Hospital-Mount Scopus, is Uschi Fellner, co-founder of the Austrian journal, News, and magazine, Woman, as well as a member of the Hadassah Austria Board of Directors.

Hadassah Austria President Susi Shaked accompanied two renowned artists on a tour of the Hadassah Medical Center--Director Hans Neuenfels and his wife, Elisabeth Trissenaar, an actress.  Mr. Neuenfels, who directs operas in Salzburg, Munich, Berlin, and Beirut, wasn't feeling well during his visit to Hadassah, Mrs. Shaked reports, but a Hadassah puppeteer "seemed to have miraculously cured him." He and Mrs. Trissenaar watched with fascination as the puppeteer performed at the sick children's bedside.

On a winter night in February around the dinner table at a Tel Aviv restaurant, leading Israeli pediatricians, Prof. Frank Oberklaid, internationally renowned Australian community child health specialist, and Hadassah Australia President Ron Finkel brainstormed the next phase for the dream to bring a comprehensive community pediatrics program to Israel.

As the guest of Hadassah United Kingdom, Dr. Shir Dar, Hadassah Medical Center physician who participated in Israel's rescue mission to Haiti, shared his experience with a multitude of diverse audiences, reaching hundreds of people.

Hadassah France was pleased to provide forums for the Hadassah Medical Center's Dr. Shir Dar to share his memories of taking part in Israel's rescue mission in Haiti.

The BHF Bank, one of Germany's foremost private banks, in cooperation with the German Israeli Association (DIG), hosted an art auction this winter in Berlin on behalf of Hadassah Germany and the Hadassah Medical Center, featuring the Masada series of paintings by renowned German artist, Frank Rödel.
