's Hadassah Medical Center has, for the first time in the world, repaired fractured bones by harnessing adult stem cells and platelets from their patients' blood and bone marrow and injecting them at the fracture site.

Once the focus of worldwide attention, genetic therapy's dazzling potential has proven difficult to implement. However, a team at Hadassah is still researching healing through the manipulation of DNA—and they have had some surprising successes.
 


Hadassah Medical Center researchers have demonstrated that when Colostrum, the milk produced by cows immediately after calving, is enriched with insulin antibodies, it is an effective treatment for fatty liver disease in mice.


A Phase One clinical trial at the Hadassah Medical Center revealed that ingesting one dose of a new slow-release Metadoxine formula before consuming alcohol lowered the level of blood alcohol, dramatically improved motor and cognitive functions, and decreased the craving for alcohol in the test participants. The formula was developed by Alcobra Ltd., a start-up company of Hadasit, Hadassah's technology transfer company.


"Peace Through Health: Partnership in Emergency Medicine," the trilateral cooperative venture involving the Hadassah Medical Center, Augusta Victoria Hospital, East Jerusalem, and Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, aimed at upgrading Palestinian hospital emergency medicine capabilities, continues to flourish.


A six-year-old Ethiopian boy who suffers from AIDS immigrated to Israel with his father and older siblings after his mother died. The Hadassah Medical Center has given him a quality of life he hasn't experienced in a long time.


Dr. Tamar Sella, a radiology oncologist with a specialty in imaging, is the head of the Breast Imaging Center at Hadassah Hospital-Ein Kerem. A member of a multidisciplinary team of physicians, including oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, and radiologists, she is dedicated to improving the early diagnosis and clinical care of breast cancer patients, as well as advancing research in this field. As she expresses: "Early diagnosis improves prognosis."


Researchers at the Hadassah Medical Center have demonstrated that when administered orally for one month to mice, frozen natural extract of the Hoodia Parviflora cactus plant decreases the level of blood sugar and fat in the liver and alleviates symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome for those with fatty liver disease.


Hadassah Medical Center researchers have demonstrated that a quick, noninvasive methacetin breath test (MBT) can accurately predict survival in patients with viral hepatitis, enabling physicians to list high-risk patients earlier for liver transplantation.


The Hadassah Medical Center's surgeons have successfully performed 39 operations assisted by the da Vinci® robot.

Auckland District Health Board Analyst Dr. Ronald Ma, recently returned from his clinical exchange at the Hadassah Medical Center, impressed by the standard of clinical practice and the professionalism, motivation, and enthusiasm of its health professionals.  When asked what he would like others around the world to know about the Hadassah Medical Center, he responded: "Hadassah is the most neutral place and contributes to the international community with its wealth of knowledge, expertise, and innovation, regardless of race, religion and politics."



Family From Nice, France Dedicates Their Gift to Hadassah Medical Center
Yael Lehmann from Hadassah Nice Côte d'Azur, France, together with her husband, Patrick, and son, Jean-David, who lives in Israel, celebrated their gift to the Center  for Children with Chronic Diseases at the Hadassah Medical Center with a visit in November.  Senior Physician Dr. Shaia Wexler and Head Nurse Yael Kastiel gave the family a tour of the facilities, explaining the functions of the various rooms and clinics. The family then unveiled the plaque that commemorates their donation in memory of Patrick's family, who perished in the Holocaust.

Fortified with donated designer clothes, Hadassah Austria once again hosted its annual designer sale in a Vienna art gallery, raising $12,000 dollars for the Hadassah Medical Center.


Launching a breast cancer awareness campaign to motivate Mexican women to perform regular, monthly breast examinations, Hadassah Mexico sent e –mail flyers, publicizing the statistic that 9 out of 10 women discover their own cancers through breast self-examination.



Over 180 enthusiastic Young Hadassah (YH) supporters and friends, both new and long-timers, celebrated the autumn season at Young Hadassah United Kingdom's Halloween Cocktail Party in London on October 29. The setting was a trendy lounge in the center of the city, featuring two world-class DJs who kept the celebrants dancing late into the night.
