| Dear Colleagues... | ||||
I felt particularly honored to be invited to attend a reunion in Marseille, France of participants from a recent mission to HMO of the Conseil Repr?ntatif des Institutions Juives de France (CRIF). CRIF is the umbrella group of Jewish organizations in France, but the mission included Jews as well as non-Jews. I look forward to a long and fruitful association with them. I urge you to encourage Hadassah International supporters, politicians, government officials, and dignitaries from all fields of life to visit HMO. The visit will open their minds to the possibilities of healing and show vividly how HMO is a bridge to peace through medicine. We will gain lifetime friends for HMO! We hope you will all come to our Hadassah Conference in Jerusalem, April 27-May 1, 2006 and see the work of your hands at our hospitals. You will be treated to illustrious speakers and have the pleasure to be there as we honor the brilliant architect, Moshe Safdie, who designed the new museum at the renowned Holocaust memorial, Yad Vashem. (Click here for conference flyer and registration forms.) I look forward to hosting each of you! With friendship, Marlene

| The 18th annual congress of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine was held recently in Amsterdam, Holland. The congress is one of the leading professional gatherings in the world for this field. Hadassah was well represented by Professor Charles Sprung, Director of HMO?s General Intensive Care Unit, and Julie Benbenishty, R.N., an HMO intensive care nurse, who were 2 out of the 13 members on the organizing committee. More... Professor Meir Liebergall, Chair of HMO?s Department of Orthopedic Surgery, will be one of the lecturers at a highly prestigious symposium on "Extremity War Injuries: Current, State of the Art, and Future Directions." The symposium will take place in Washington, D.C. next January... More... Medtronic and Zimmer, two giant American corporations, have published a brochure on "Orthopedic Navigation Solutions--Computer-Assisted Surgery." The brochure includes quotations from only four physicians about the technologies and products described in it. One is from Prof. Meir Liebergall, head of HMO's Department of Orthopedic Surgery. In addition, only three articles are quoted in the brochure as professional references. Two of them were written by Hadassah orthopedists. | |||

| Did You Know? | |||
| HMO?s Dr. Yuval Weiss, Deputy Director of Hadassah Ein Kerem, reports that he receives five to ten phone calls every day from Palestinian hospitals asking if a patient can come to HMO. They say it?s because ?You?re the best,? he relates. His response: ?We try to help everyone who asks for our help.? Editor?s Note: HMO Newsbytes are excerpted from The Jerusalem Netletter, the Heart Institute Newsletter, Correspondence from HMO, and the HMO website. | HMO Offers Help to Jordan | |||
| A few hours after the terrorist attack in Amman, Jordan, HMO offered assistance. The offer went out by telephone to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to the Jordanian Embassy in Tel Aviv, and to the Israeli Embassy in Amman. Also, a letter of solidarity that included the same offer was sent to the Royal Palace in Amman. | |||

| Fortified to confront public health issues in their homelands, the members of the 30th International Master of Public Health class of the Braun Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Public Health and Community Medicine recently completed their year of studies and headed back to Macedonia, Russia, Romania, Mongolia, Ethiopia, Bulgaria, Uganda, USA, Israel, Kenya, Nigeria, and Moldova. As Bonnie Lipton, immediate past National President of Hadassah USA, noted at the graduation ceremonies: "The Master of Public Health is more than an academic master?s for us; it is a mission to other countries.? The newest class studying toward an International Master of Public Health is comprised of 17 students from the Republic of Cameroon, Ethiopia, Uganda, Russia, Australia, India, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Canada, Germany, the United States, and East Jerusalem. Attendees at the Hadassah International Conference in Jerusalem this April will have the opportunity to meet some of these pioneering individuals. | |||
| Betting on a Rat Race | |||
| We have been told that exercise is good for us. ?Work up a nice sweat and get in shape? has been the credo for many years. But how good, indeed, is regular exercise for the heart? Does it prevent heart problems? Does it rehabilitate a heart patient after a heart attack? The Hadassah Cardiology laboratory is investigating these questions using rats as their model animals. HMO scientists are studying heart functions in four different experimental groups of rats, and hope to prove that exercise considerably strengthens the heart and even after a heart attack, will improve rehabilitation. The preliminary results are very encouraging. Therefore, the doctors? advice is: Don?t wait until it?s too late; regular exercise will improve your heart function. | |||
| Hadassah Optimal opens in Jerusalem | |||
| The world-renowned Hadassah Medical Organization is offering another unique service to Jerusalem residents and people from throughout Israel. Hadassah Optimal, which just opened in the Malcha neighborhood of Jerusalem, provides a variety of medical services, including sophisticated therapies and treatments, as well as workshops to improve quality of life, self-image, and esthetic appearance -- all at one location. | |||
| Doctor, What?s for Dinner? | |||
| What's one of Hadassah's medical students doing teaching cooking at Hadassah College Jerusalem? Rani Polack, age 33, has just completed his sixth and final year of Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Medicine. But to put it bluntly, Polack has had a hard time deciding what he wants to do when he grows up. First, he wanted to study medicine as a route to becoming a veterinarian. Then he led outback tours to Australia. Afterwards, he switched to human medicine. While he was in Australia, however, he took a chef's course from Le Cordon Bleu. Finally, it all came together. He became interested in Crohn's disease, the severe gastrointestinal illness that requires a very strict diet eliminating most fruits, vegetables, and fiber. More... | |||

| As is their tradition, Anne-Marie Gravdahl and Torbjorn Ekroll of Help the Jews Home, which supports projects for new immigrants in Israel (including training at HMO) once again brought a delegation to our hospital. This time, there were 97 participants, all dedicated friends of Israel. Dr. Ricardo Segal of HMO?s Department of Neurosurgery educated attendees about the state-of-the-art medicine he practices. The delegation was very much impressed by the miracles Dr. Segal accomplishes, relates Shoshana Matan, Hadassah International?s liaison to HMO. More... | ||||

Hadassah New Zealand | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hadassah New Zealand hailed another success with its annual World Wide Walk around the bays. On one of Auckland?s warm late spring mornings, almost 200 walkers set out from the Kohimaramara Eastern Suburbs Football Club to begin the 8-kilometer round-trip walk to Okahu Bay. Kids raced along the boardwalk and power walkers pounded the pavements as buggies and prams were pushed leisurely along at their own pace. A couple of the more intrepid members were out in full cycling regalia, clearly enjoying the fresh air. Into its fifth year, the walk attracts a colorful group of supportive members and friends who enjoy the opportunity to combine healthy outdoor exercise with a chance to socialize. ?The aim of Hadassah to bring people from all walks of life together was more than evident at this fundraising walk,? commented Lindy Davis, an active member of Hadassah New Zealand and daughter of President Valda Knight. Hadassah France, under the presidency of Doctor Sydney Ohana, held its first event of the Paris season on September 12: a fundraising dinner at the residence of Israeli Ambassador to France H.E. Nissim Zvili. Professor Shlomo Mor-Yosef addressed the audience of 100 donors on HMO?s latest achievements, noting that after the trying years of the intifada, Hadassah was turning its attention now to children, in particular those with chronic diseases. Shown here from left to right: Dr. Sydney Ohana, President, Hadassah France; Nicole Guedj, former French State Secretary for Victims' Rights and Hadassah France supporter; H.E. Nissim Zvili, Israeli Ambassador to France; Michel Leeb, Patron, Hadassah France; and HMO Director General Prof. Shlomo Mor-Yosef Michel Leeb, famous French actor and singer who has performed often during the last 10 years for the benefit of Hadassah, was officially named ?Patron of Hadassah France.? He accepted with humility, grace, and humor, saying that he didn?t hesitate one second when Michelle Israel, Director of Hadassah France, asked him to take on this new role. ?We, actors,? he said, ?are often asked to lend our names for certain causes and one has to make a choice. ?Humanitarian causes that deal with life and with the means to save lives, are important to me and Hadassah whose principle it is to heal without discrimination is the standard bearer of excellence in this field. ?To be a link in this chain of solidarity and survival, makes me extremely proud.? At the end of the evening, several major donors were recognized by Bea Birnbaum, Director of Development, for their generous contributions. Many guests who were present for the first time at such a dinner were invited to make donations, allowing them to become part of this very special Hadassah family. The event raised about 100,000 euros. More...

Hadassah United Kingdom?s newly launched PATH Committee held its inaugural function with featured speaker Dr. Zvi Israel of HMO?s Department of Neurosurgery. PATH was formed to support Dr. Israel?s research into Parkinson?s disease. Dr. Israel spoke to the audience of approximately 100 people about his work in trying to alleviate the symptoms of this debilitating illness. The inspiration for the formation of this committee came from an individual who is grappling with Parkinson?s. PATH plans to host a fundraiser early in 2006 to raise additional funds for Dr. Israel?s research. HMO On Radio Both HMO Director General Professor Shlomo Mor-Yosef and Professor Brian Glenville, head of HMO?s Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, were interviewed by Spectrum Radio, England?s Jewish radio station, when they recently visited London.

| Young Hadassah International Workshop: Towards a New Future | ||||
Young Hadassah International Chair Amos Attali, also Chair of Young Hadassah Holland, welcomed everyone Saturday afternoon. Stacie Podos, Liaison to YHI and a member of the Hadassah International Team in New York, led the introductions during which participants shared how they became involved with YHI and why they stayed involved. The recurring reason for joining YHI was friendship. Most volunteers were asked to help at a local event by a friend who was already involved. But what has kept everyone involved is what they have seen when visiting HMO and what they have learned about HMO?s treatment and research, while maintaining friendships and meeting new friends all across the globe. YHI participants included Gennie Freen, Aaron Konijn, Benjamin Korper, and Anna Weil from Holland; Josh Schroeder and Michael Telias from Israel; David Abergel, Helo? Fredj, and Marc Gourvitch from France; Stacey Plax from the United Kingdom; Orly Leventer from Germany; German Chullmir and Romina Libster from Argentina; and Joslyn Arnon, Sandrine Asseraf, Aimee Falchuk, and Amira Walt from the United States.
