A third group of Ethiopian doctors and nurses has arrived at Hadassah as part of the “Train the Trainers” program to help Ethiopia cope with its AIDS pandemic. "This is the best group yet," commented Professor Shlomo Maayan, Head of Hadassah's AIDS Center and the architect of Hadassah's involvement in this life-saving venture.

Facilitated by the initiative of Hadassah Australia in Melbourne, the Hadassah Medical Organization’s Dr. Esti Galili, Head of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, is forging connections with medical institutions and community leaders in Australia through a whirlwind week of speaking engagements. Accompanied by Hadassah International President Marlene Post, Dr. Galili, also director of Hadassah’s new Jerusalem Crisis Intervention Center (JCIC), a fundraising project of Hadassah Australia, began with a presentation at Monash University at the invitation of its Krongold Centre.

To acquaint a group of her friends with the work of Hadassah International and the Hadassah Medical Organization, Hadassah International supporter Anna Zaoui invited them to her home for an informational breakfast. For the most part, the group was comprised of young French women living in London. Mrs. Zaoui and her husband, Michael, visited the Hadassah Medical Center recently during the inauguration of the Judy and Sydney Swartz Center for Emergency Medicine.

Creative socializing and fundraising marked Young Hadassah France’s December afternoon cocktail party featuring a “Hanukkah Donut Quiz.” Held in a Paris synagogue, the event included “sweet cocktails” (with donuts and fresh mint tea), the showing of a Hadassah Medical Center film, and a quiz, where teams were challenged to recognize excerpts from songs. ”It was really fun,” reports Young Hadassah International Board Member Marc Gourvitch. “Such an atmosphere of sane competition!”

Young Hadassah Germany participated in a four-day "Jugendkongress" (Congress for Young People) in December by hosting a stand with information about Hadassah International. The focus of the Congress was “Anyone Who Doesn’t Believe in Miracles is not a Realist.” It included lectures about the development of Jewish communities in Germany and German-Israeli relations.

In December, Hadassah France hosted a concert in one of the most beautiful concert halls in Paris to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of Yitzhak Rabin. An excerpt from the requiem, created by Israeli Composer Dov Seltzer following the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, was a highlight of the musical agenda.
The concert was held under the patronage of Jacques Chirac, President of the French Republic, and Dominique de Villepin, Prime Minister. Attending the event were 1800 Hadassah guests, many of them government officials (those in the government at present and those who want to be), television, theater, and film personalities, major sponsors, and supporters of Hadassah France. Marlene Post, President of Hadassah International, greeted the guests who came from Nice, Geneva, Monaco, and Belgium to attend this exceptional event, which raised over 300,000 euros for the Hadassah Medical Organization.

Hadassah Cuba, under the leadership of its president, Dr. Rosa Behar, ended 2005 on a busy note, sponsoring a community-wide lecture on bioethics followed by a holiday party. Plans for 2006 include a series of weekly health lectures for seniors.

Hadassah Wellington walkers eagerly participated in Hadassah’s World Wide Walk. Joining them were two special guests from Israel: former Wellingtonians who have been living in Israel for 30 years and were back in New Zealand for an aunt’s 92nd birthday celebration. Adding to the enjoyment were prizes for the first person to arrive home, the last to arrive, and the youngest child to participate.
