Hadassah Australia leaders knew the Hadassah Medical Center could be of major assistance in the aftermath of “Black Saturday,” when bush fires ravaged townships and rural centers on the outskirts of Melbourne, causing major destruction and loss of lives. They suggested that Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital invite Dr. Esti Galili, head of Hadassah’s Jerusalem Crisis Intervention Center (JCIC), to help health professionals treat the traumatized children. Dr. Galili was already slated to travel to Australia to greet and update supporters of the JCIC, the fundraising project adopted by Hadassah Australia.

When Kathy Chiron, a long-time Hadassah supporter and Chair of Hadassah Hong Kong, heard that Hadassah Medical Center Nurse Specialist Ilana Kadmon was in China, she embraced the opportunity to introduce her to Hong Kong friends and acquaintances by planning two presentations for her: one with the League of Women Voters, and the other at a special lunch Mrs. Chiron hosted.

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is a singer, model, First Lady of France, Good Will Ambassador for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, and a wonderful friend and advocate of the Hadassah Medical Center. On March 5, she was the guest of honor at a gala fundraiser organized by Hadassah France in Paris, helping to raise over $380,000 for Hadassah’s global outreach to orphans with AIDS in Ethiopia.

At a lecture hosted by Hadassah Australia in Sydney, Prof. Shmuel Shapira, Deputy Director General of the Hadassah Medical Center and former head of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Trauma Unit, shared an “insider account” of lessons he learned about mass casualty management while a Lieutenant Colonel in the IDF.

The Snaider and Btesh families from Panama visited their Hadassah friends, Pnina Sharon, Head Nurse of the Judy and Sidney Swartz Center for Emergency Medicine, and Dr. Gidon Almogy of Hadassah’s Trauma Unit at Ein Kerem. Ms. Sharon and Dr. Almogy traveled to Hospital Santo Tomás in Panama City to provide hands-on training for the doctors and nurses in the emergency, surgery, and trauma units.

Hundreds of people attended Hadassah Germany’s Charity Party in Munich, under the patronage of Axel Milberg, a member of the German Board of Governors, where they learned about the renovation of the Pediatrics Department at Hadassah Hospital-Mount Scopus.

Hadassah Switzerland President Ellen Frick-Delman and her husband, Rolf, visited Israel and the Hadassah Medical Center for the first time and found the experience “absolutely inspirational.”

With red and white Hadassah balloons creating an uplifting welcome for the 250 participants, Hadassah Panama hosted a Women’s Health Day entitled “To Your Health and Wellness,” providing advice from specialists on a wide variety of topics as well as opportunities for creative exercise, a nutritious breakfast buffet, cooking demonstration, and tasting menu lunch. Funds realized, thanks to the many sponsors and speakers who donated their time, are earmarked for the Blood Bank at the Hadassah Medical Center.

It is with heartfelt sadness that we inform you of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) National President Terry Schwarzfeld’s passing in Ottawa this morning. Collectively, our thoughts and prayers are with her husband, Steve; her sons, Adam, Simon, and David; her daughter-in-law, Luana; and her grandson, Benjamin.
