Hadassah Cuba sponsored a program in June featuring Israel’s outreach work to enhance Africa’s health care; a historical look at 200 years of Tel Aviv; and an update on research breakthroughs and cutting-edge care at the Hadassah Medical Center. With the aid of the unit’s Scientific Committee, they also sponsored a survey in coordination with a local women’s organization to educate the public about prevention of breast cancer.

Building on the heightened visibility in Germany for the Hadassah Medical Center’s cutting-edge healing, teaching, and research, Director of Hadassah Germany Gady Gronich welcomed Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower Campaign Chairs Judy and Sidney Swartz to Germany to launch the Tower Fundraising Campaign. “It was so exciting to meet all kinds of people who, regardless of their faith, admire the brainpower and research at Hadassah and want to partner with us,” Mrs. Swartz relates.

With the triple goal of providing emergency health education, raising awareness about Hadassah International, and generating funds for the pediatric wing of the new Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower at the Hadassah Medical Center, Hadassah Mexico launched its first First Aid Course, with the intention of offering new classes each month. The course was modeled after the successful First Aid seminar created by Hadassah Panama.

Hadassah New Zealand has chosen the recipients of the inaugural Valda Knight Memorial Scholarship for study at the Hadassah Medical Center: Dr. Ronald Ma of Auckland, whose particular interest is immigrant health and providing services for migrant people; and Dr. Benjamin Sedley of Wellington, a clinical psychologist specializing in child and adolescent mental health.

Timed to coincide with Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Israel, Hadassah France prepared a story highlighting the Hadassah Medical Center’s treatment of Christian Palestinian children from an orphanage in Bethlehem. It was broadcast on Antenne Deux--France Television Channel 2.

Nine top-level Australian physicians traveled to the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem at the end of April to participate in the first conference sponsored by AUSiMed, a bilateral medical initiative spearheaded by Hadassah Australia. During the intensive two days of sharing their expertise and medical protocols within two tracks—neuroscience/regenerative medicine and child health—they mapped out opportunities for future medical and scientific exchanges with Hadassah.

In appreciation for his life-long extensive and influential communal work, Gennie Freen, immediate past Chair of Young Hadassah Holland, was decorated as a member of the Royal Dutch Order of Orange-Nassau by the mayor of the city of Amstelveen (bordering Amsterdam) on behalf of the Queen of the Netherlands. Mr. Freen, 35, was nominated by his friends and Young Hadassah colleagues for this prestigious honor, which is awarded to upstanding citizens with long records of devoted humanitarian service.
