The first three recipients of the Nancy Falchuk Nursing Scholarship Award——Mina Rowe, Dafna Lavian, and Maayan Bocvalter——are using their awards to make a difference, each through her unique brand of innovative nursing. Established in tribute to Hadassah International’s Immediate Past President, with donations from units around the world, the award recognizes the contribution of top nurses at the Hadassah Medical Organization.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel C. Kurtzer and his wife, Sheila Kurtzer, president, Hadassah International’s Corps Diplomatique, were presented with the Henrietta Szold Award, Hadassah’s highest recognition, at the Hadassah USA National Convention in July. The Corps is comprised of Ambassadors to Israel and their spouses and raises awareness among members of the diplomatic community about the Hadassah Medical Organization’s cutting-edge clinical care, groundbreaking research, and worldwide medical and educational outreach.

His Excellency The Ambassador of Israel to the United States, Daniel Ayalon, greeted guests at the Hadassah International Ambassadors Luncheon in Washington, D.C., saying, “It is a privilege to host this luncheon in honor of His Excellency Daniel Kurtzer, the United States of America Ambassador to Israel and Mrs. Sheila Kurtzer. I proudly bring greetings from the State of Israel and thank Hadassah for all that it does. The Hadassah Medical Organization has helped us cope with the victims of terrorism, its cutting edge innovations are a source of pride, and the way the staff treats all patients shows the way for reconciliation and hope in the future.”

All her classmates, teachers, and school principal came to visit Rasha Sablavan, a 13-year-old teenager from the Palestinian village of Beit-Hanina in East Jerusalem, at Hadassah Ein Kerem. She has been a patient at Hadassah for a year. As it was almost the end of the school year, her school principal presented her with her report card and a class picture.

Elizabeth Finkel, science journalist and sister-in-law of Hadassah Australia in Melbourne President Ron Finkel, has written a book about the impassioned stem cell research debate. Entitled Stem Cells: Controversy at the Frontiers of Science, the book translates the complex science into layman's terms and explores the politics and resulting media spins, the moral conflicts, the economics, and the impact of all these issues on the future of stem cell research.

For ten years now, the Hadassah Medical Organization has played an important role in improving the health of Ethiopia’s people. One of HMO’s most important contributions has been in HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention. As you read this, Hadassah’s AIDS Center (HAC) is conducting an AIDS treatment program at the St. Paul Hospital in Addis Ababa in collaboration with the Ethiopian Health and Nutrition Research Institute (EHNRI) and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
