Fortified to confront public health issues in their homelands, the members of the 30th International Master of Public Health class of the Braun Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Public Health and Community Medicine recently completed their year of studies and headed back to Macedonia, Russia, Romania, Mongolia, Ethiopia, Bulgaria, Uganda, USA, Israel, Kenya, Nigeria, and Moldova. We have been told that exercise is good for us. “Work up a nice sweat and get in shape” has been the credo for many years. But how good, indeed, is regular exercise for the heart? Does it prevent heart problems? Does it rehabilitate a heart patient after a heart attack? The Hadassah Cardiology laboratory is investigating these questions using rats as their model animals.

What's one of Hadassah's medical students doing teaching cooking at Hadassah College Jerusalem? Rani Polack, age 33, has just completed his sixth and final year of Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Medicine. But to put it bluntly, Polack has had a hard time deciding what he wants to do when he grows up. First, he wanted to study medicine as a route to becoming a veterinarian. Then he led outback tours to Australia. Afterwards, he switched to human medicine. While he was in Australia, however, he took a chef's course from Le Cordon Bleu. Finally, it all came together. He became interested in Crohn's disease, the severe gastrointestinal illness that requires a very strict diet eliminating most fruits, vegetables, and fiber.

A man doing road construction on a main Jerusalem street last month fell with his tractor into a very large hole that was suddenly created beneath him. The hole was full of water and the man began to drown. Fire fighters rescued him and a Magen David Adom ambulance took him to Hadassah Hospital at Ein Kerem. He was treated in the trauma unit and two days later, he went home, feeling well.

HMO’s Dr. Yuval Weiss, Deputy Director of Hadassah Ein Kerem, reports that he receives five to ten phone calls every day from Palestinian hospitals asking if a patient can come to HMO. They say it’s because “You’re the best,” he relates. His response: “We try to help everyone who asks for our help.”

Dr. Yair Birnbaum, HMO Associate Director General, will present a lecture this month in Panama entitled "Hadassah as a Bridge to Peace: New Medical Breakthroughs." The lecture is jointly sponsored by Hadassah International and the umbrella group of Jewish organizations, El Consejo Central Comunitario Hebreo.

The 2005 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to both the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its director general, Mohamed ElBaradei, “for their efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way.” We congratulate the recipients and feel that, in this anniversary year of the nuclear destruction at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this is a fitting tribute to our universal concern for the containment of nuclear weapons.
