Hadassah Austria President Susi Shaked had the opportunity to hear a presentation by HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan at a meeting of the “Club of Rome,” an organization of politicians and business people, where the Prince’s topic was a proposal to produce solar energy in the desert. “All my country has is dessert, sun, and human power,” the Prince said, and his plan is to send this solar energy via pipelines to Europe. Prince Hassan is the recipient of the Club’s 2008 Abraham Geiger Award, honoring his role as a voice for global sustainability, reconciliation, and interreligious understanding.

The Austro-Israel society, in which Hadassah Austria President Susi Shaked is Secretary General, hosted Israel’s Ambassador HE Dan Ashbel for a presentation on Israel’s 61 years of existence and expectations. HE Ashbel, chosen by the Austrian public as “Communicator of the Year,” elucidated the difficulties Israel has faced throughout its history.

United Kingdom Member of Parliament (MP) The Rt Hon James Arbuthnot visited the Hadassah Medical Center last fall and wrote a laudatory article, which was published in the Conservative Friends of Israel magazine in June, praising Hadassah particularly for its humanitarian care, educational outreach, and trauma medicine.

A delegation of directors of social institutions and a second delegation of physicians and dentists, both from France, toured the Hadassah Medical Center this Spring.

In 2006, a group of teenagers from the United Kingdom raised over $20,000 for the children in the Hadassah Medical Center’s pediatric oncology department through a Walk-a-Thon, in memory of their friend, Zoe Jacobs, who died of a leukemia-related infection. Recently, while on a youth group trip to Israel, they visited Hadassah and saw the entertainment trolleys purchased thanks to their donation.

The United Nations Non-Governmental Organization Committee on Peace, reports Hadassah Austria President and First Vice-Chair of the Committee Susi Shaked, hosted a presentation entitled “Breaking the Vicious Circle,” showcasing the long-term project initiated by a Protestant Reverend in collaboration with a Muslim from Germany and a Jew from Jerusalem. The project goal: to involve young people in promoting understanding and peace among peoples in conflict.

Forty-four people from Alsace, France visited the Hadassah Medical Center, together with their Pastor in February, where they heard a presentation by Prof. Judith Melki, formerly from France and now head of Hadassah’s Human Genetics Department.

On Tuesday, January 27, the Hadassah Medical Center signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the renowned Institut de Cancérologie Gustave Roussy (IGR) of Villejuif, France, establishing a twinning initiative for collaboration on cancer healing, teaching, and research between Roussy and Hadassah’s Sharett Institute of Oncology.

“Talking for Peace—A Karl Kahane Lecture Series,” sponsored by The Bruno Kreisky Forum for International Dialogue in cooperation with the Karl Kahane Foundation, included a presentation on “Medical Ethics and Terror,” featuring the Hadassah Medical Center’s Prof. Avraham Rivkind, head of the Trauma Unit and Department of General Surgery, and Raja’l Fouzi George Qumyiseh, a Karl Kahane Fellow, who is receiving specialized training in surgery and traumatology at Hadassah.

“Help the Jews Home,” a philanthropic organization in Norway that is a long-time supporter of the Hadassah Medical Center, has partnered with Hadassah’s Patricia and Russell Fleischman Women’s Health Center to fund health programs for new Israeli immigrants from the former Soviet Union. These programs offer preventive health information to elderly residents in the Israeli town of Gonenim, teaching them the importance of physical activity and providing a comfortable, convenient setting for them to exercise close to home. A delegation from Help the Jews Home visited the Center last year during their Feast of Tabernacles trip to Israel.
