In a study entitled “Improving Health Care Delivery by Removing Language Barriers: The Impact of Medical Translators,” a team of Hadassah pediatricians has shown that medical translators improve parents’ satisfaction about the quality of health care their children receive at the Hadassah Medical Center. Prof. Shaia Wexler and Dr. Ariel Tenenbaum discovered that parents who do not understand Hebrew and don’t receive language support, feel they are not receiving the same level of care as families who speak Hebrew.

Born in the Dabburiya Village of Israel’s Valley of Jezreel, Prof. Ahmed Eid, head of the General Surgery Department at Hadassah Hospital-Mount Scopus as well as Hadassah’s Transplantation Unit, was educated at the Municipal High School in Nazareth and then went on to the Hebrew University's Faculty of Science, before entering the Hadassah School of Medicine in 1973. With his expertise in liver transplantation, Prof. Eid leads Hadassah teams in giving severely ill patients a new chance at a quality life.

Immuron, a Melbourne, Australia biopharmaceutical company, has announced an agreement to acquire a novel Oral Immune Modulation technology developed by Hadassah physicians, which could lead to a new approach to treating Type II diabetes, hepatitis C virus (HCV), and liver cancer.

When Kathy Chiron, a long-time Hadassah supporter and Chair of Hadassah Hong Kong, heard that Hadassah Medical Center Nurse Specialist Ilana Kadmon was in China, she embraced the opportunity to introduce her to Hong Kong friends and acquaintances by planning two presentations for her: one with the League of Women Voters, and the other at a special lunch Mrs. Chiron hosted.

Susi Shaked, Präsidentin von Hadassah Österrreich und Erste Vizepräsidentin des nichtstaatlichen Friedensorganisationskomitees bei den Vereinten Nationen war Gastgeberin einer Veranstaltung mit dem Titel “Breaking the Vicious Circle,” („Durchbrecht den Teufelskreis“) und präsentierte ein Projekt, das ein protestantischer Geistlicher zusammen mit einem Moslem aus Deutschland und einem Juden aus Jerusalem ins Leben gerufen hatte. Ziel der Veranstaltung war, junge Menschen anzuregen, sich für mehr Verständnis und Frieden zwischen Menschen in Konfliktsituationen zu engagieren.

Vierundvierzig Menschen aus dem Elsass, Frankreich, besuchten im Februar zusammen mit ihrem Seelsorger das Hadassah Medical Center, wo sie an einer Präsentation von Frau Prof. Judith Melki teilnahmen, die ursprünglich ebenfalls aus Frankreich kommt und jetzt Leiterin der Abteilung für Humangenetik ist.

Untersuchungen eines Orthopäden und Unfallchirurgen von Hadassah haben erbracht, dass Frauen, die nach der Menopause einen Unterarmbruch erleiden und vom Klinikpersonal darauf aufmerksam gemacht werden, dass Osteoporose mit eine der Ursachen für die Fraktur sein könnte, mit sehr viel größerer Wahrscheinlichkeit ihren Arzt aufsuchen, um einen Knochendichtetest machen zu lassen, was wiederum eine frühere Diagnose und Behandlung zur Folge hat.

Dr. Eyal Shteyer, auf Kinderheilkunde spezialisierter Gastroenterologe am Hadassah Medical Center, führt zur Zeit bahnbrechende Untersuchungen durch, die zu einer wesentlich effektiveren Behandlung von Leberkrebs und höheren Überlebenschancen nach einer entsprechenden Tumorentfernung führen könnten.

Dr. Shmuel Harris kam kurz nach seiner Einwanderung aus Melbourne, Australien, an die psychiatrische Abteilung des Hadassah Medical Centers. Die Psychiatrie sei sein Idealberuf, so Dr. Harris, denn er liebe es, Menschen zuzuhören, sich auf ihre Probleme einzulassen und ihnen bei deren Lösung zu helfen.
