Natali Pflug, a German medical student from Heidelberg, now in her fifth year of medical studies in Mannheim, Germany, looks back fondly on her academic exchange experience at the Hadassah Medical Center during the Spring of 2006. As she looks at her options for future medical study, she notes, “it is difficult to find a comparable option to Hadassah.”

A Hadassah Medical Organization research team, in collaboration with a team from the University of Pennsylvania, USA, has developed a peptide that could save the lives of people stricken with ischemic strokes. The findings, published recently in the prestigious medical journal, Nature Neuroscience, reveal a way to bypass the serious side effects of a medication used to dissolves clots, opening the door to a safe way to treat victims of stroke.

Israel is a powerhouse in human embryonic stem cell (hESC) research, with its researchers in second place after the US in absolute (not per capita) numbers of publications in scientific journals up to the end of 2005 - way ahead of the UK, Korea, China, Singapore, Australia, Sweden and Canada.

Behailu Megus, age six, is one of the 400 Ethiopian orphans being treated by Prof. Dan Engelhard, Head of the Hadassah Medical Organization Pediatrics Department at Ein Kerem, and his team. Behailu was born with AIDS. His mother died of AIDS and his father is very sick as well.
While on his recent visit to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Prof. Engelhard realized that Behailu's condition had deteriorated and that if he did not undergo middle lobe lobotomy of his lung, he would die. The only way to save the boy’s life was to bring him to Israel. With the help of the Jewish Agency, the Hadassah Medical Organization, and a generous donor, the mission was accomplished. Behailu received the necessary surgery and recovered quickly.

An art gallery in the center of Vienna was the chosen venue for Hadassah Austria’s June lecture about Freud. Despite the warm weather (and the lack of air conditioning), there was standing room only!

Springtime was the season for a Hadassah Nice fundraising concert featuring The Gipsy King singers. Attended by 650 people and raising 1500 euros for Hadassah, the concert was followed by a party at the beautiful Palais de Mediterranee hotel.

Seven years ago, Professor Thomas Ruzicka, then Head of the Department of Dermatology at the Heinrich-Heine University, Düsseldorf, Germany, took on the presidency of Hadassah Germany. Prof. Ruzicka proposed a collaboration with Hadassah‘s Dermatology Department, under Prof. David Enk, which led to the establishment of the Hadassah-Germany Skin Center. In celebration of her daughter, Sharon’s Bat Mitzvah, Hadassah Mexico Director Ethel Fainstein organized a family trip to Israel. They spent a day touring the Hadassah Medical Organization, visiting with various physicians. “My daughters were particularly interested in the Mother and Child building,” Fainstein relates.

David Gold of Young Hadassah Australia toured Hadassah Medical Center with his wife, Masha, and their children this past July. “David and Masha were the gracious hosts of an evening for young adults when Hadassah International President Marlene Post and Prof. Esti Galili, Head of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Hadassah, were visiting Melbourne in February,” notes Hadassah Australia President Ron Finkel.
